Dance Shoes - Street Shoes: What is the difference?

The most obvious difference is the sole. Normal street shoes have either a rubber or leather sole. Both are not particularly suited for good dancing. Either you cannot move (rubber) or slip on the floor (leather). Dance shoes, therefore, have special thin soles of leather and chrome what is giving them the correct grip and an optimal glide.
Another important point is the agility in dancing. Proper dance shoes are not as stable and must be closely at the foot. However in order for stability, ensure they have a special or an elastic strap. They also have a solid closed heel which is avoiding that you slip out.

Dance Shoes - Who needs them?

In principle, anyone who is dancing regularly. You will notice the difference quickly and have more fun and success in dancing. Your feet will thank you for it.

Dance Shoes - Which shoe fits me?

At first you have to feel good in your Dance Shoes. Spin, dance and try them. Secondly the fashion and color should fit because you should also wear them. Make sure to think in this order when buying.

Dance Shoes are divided as follows:

  • Ladies Standard: The toes are covered and they are used for tournaments, waltz, slow waltz, tango, slow foxtrot and quickstep.
  • Ladies Latin: The toes are free and they are used for Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, samba, jive, rumba and chachacha.
  • Ladies Coach: They are completely closed, the heel is flat and wider. It is worn by trainers and during training.
  • Men Standard: They are suitable for all dances and usually have a 2.5 cm heel. They are also available for extra wide or slim feet.
  • Men Latin: Higher heel of about 4 cm and a very flexible sole. The higher heel is supporting the hip movement.
  • Dance sneaker: This new dance shoes are very similar to sport sneakers but they are totally differently because they are more flexible in the midfoot area, give you a large freedom of movement and they are both: slippery and not slippery because the have a chrome leather sole. They are ideal for hip hop / modern dance, jazz, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue or tango. Even amateur dance groups prefer dance sneakers.

Dance Shoes: What should we know when buying?

  • Shoe shape: Beginners should have a smaller toe opening because of the better grip.
  • Standard or Latin: It depends what you like more. Nowadays most of the people like Salsa, Bachata and Merengue (the Latin Dances).
  • The heel: Just take what you are used to. Your feet will be thankful.
  • Material: Smooth leather, velvet-leather, Nubuck, snthetic satin. The foot should be a kind of tightly in the shoes. Moreover take what is feeling the best for you. Leather and Velour shoes are getting wider. So take care of that and buy them in a tight fitting size because it makes you more secure later on.

Dance shoes: Maintenance

The dance shoe is worn indoors most of the time. So just take a damp cloth or transparent care for leather. Be cautious and don’t we too hard to your shoes. For the chrome leather soles there is a special brush. Don’t use them on the surface of your dance shoes.
